SCCSD ends summer meal program ahead of 1st day of school
The free summer meals program for children in Sioux City is over. This comes as the first day of school is on the horizon.
The school district served an extra 50 days of meals this year because schools shut down early due to COVID. The program was able to get up and running two days after that happened. The organizers say they saw a dramatic increase in the need for those meals.
“Over that 105-day span, we served over 513,800 meals to students in the district and so that’s been great,” said food service director, Rich Luze. “Other summer we had struggled to get 800 to 1,000 meals per day and this year we were averaging 4,800 to 5,000 meals per day.”
This was the 18th year of free summer meals for students in Sioux City. Luze says they’ll carry over many of the lessons the staff gained over this summer.
